Matinée Musicale Club met on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at the home of Marge Fryxell, pianist, who began the musical program with the Intermezzo No. 2 and Ballade No. 3 by Johannes Brahms. The Southbank Quartet, composed of Evan Hurley and Monica Hill, violins, Vincent Scacchetti, viola, and Ellen Stephens, cello, are in residence at the Immanuel School of Music and performed the Quartet No. 8 by Dmitri Shostakovich. Finally, soprano Trio Jeng, accompanied by Janelle Gelfand, sang three songs from Cantos de Amor y de Guerra by Joaquin Rodrigo, Vocalise-Étude by Maurice Ravel, Vocalise by Sergei Rachmaninoff, and finally Te Quiero Dijuste (“Magic is the Moonlight“) by Maria Grever. To our delight, Trio sang an encore, a Taiwanese song that had a humorist twist.

After the concert, Judy Martin, our Administrative Director, made some announcements concerning Matinée Musicale. Nancy Bailey gave us an update on the Nancy Walker Memorial Scholarship Competition, and Nancy Martin announced that Pene Pati, our outstanding soloist on March 3, will be back in next year’s concert series. Judy Martin reminded us that the new Board with be elected in the spring, and several members were selected for the Nominating Committee. We also recognized some of our newest members.

After the business meeting, we all adjourned to the kitchen for delicious box lunches from Panera.
